Fossil Reliquary questions our selective worship of an abstract God, and the associated promotion of human exceptionalism, over reverence for all living beings on the planet and the environments in which they reside. Through the invocation of Christian iconographic traditions [the architecture of the altarpiece and application of gold leaf], the exceptionally-preserved fossils, 306 million year old plants from North America, are elevated to the status of “holy objects,” suggesting the need for a spiritual connection to all past, present, and future life on Earth.
