Painting of a Painting is a further exploration of the components of a painting. The composition is based in the note page, discussing the building of stretchers, stretching canvas, components of paint, medium, techniques, color, and brushes. Each section of notes are connected through line, which also provides compositional structure in the work. Each component is physically attached to the canvas, presenting a three dimensional structure and revealing the physical objects and processes that make up a painting.

This is a Painting is an exploration of the components of paint in an attempt to extend what can be considered a painting. Pigments were placed in the boxes on the wall, and oil in the vessel in front, both of which are the major components of oil paint. The form is inspired by the architecture of the altarpiece and therefore reveals the artist’s reverence for the medium.
